“A Look At Energy: Reducing Your Carbon Diet: Strategies from the Cool Tool”
Everyone has a growing interest in energy efficiency and carbon reduction in the built environment, but how
to accomplish these objectives is currently not well understood. After learning about the 2030 Challenge, the
most often questions one hears are “Where should I start” and “isn’t energy efficiency expensive?” and “how
does energy relate to LEED?” This panel will discuss methods outlined in the Cool Tooltm, a new web-based
matrix which outlines pragmatic steps towards the reduction of energy use in existing or newly built
structures. The panelists are members of the multi-disciplinary team of Lighting Designers, Architects, LEED
AP Sustainability Consultants, and an MEP Engineer - all of who authored the matrix. Each will discuss their
disciplines role in formulating the Cool Tooltm; expand on the different strategies it includes and how these
can be utilized in an incremental or holistic fashion towards measurable energy and carbon reductions.

“Chicago Residential Story: Government Guided Green: The Creation and Application of the City’s Green Residential Standard”
In late 2004, while LEED H was still in draft form, the City of Chicago not only embraced change in the residential design and construction arena, the City boldly took steps to initiate it. The city’s Departments of Environment and Housing enlisted the services of Paul Knight of Domus Plus to help guide the development of a guideline for residential construction in the City. In this session Mr. Knight will share the process that the City undertook in developing their guidelines. This process included the formation of a volunteer review committee and a thorough review of all established residential standards (ENERGY STAR, NAHB, LEED H, Denver’s Built Green and the State of Illinois Energy Efficient Building Standards) The end product is a standard that pulls the best from the existing sources and presents a user friendly path to green that is coupled with City incentives. The guideline process also included a number test projects.
These test projects will also be shared as a seque into the implementation portion of the presentation during which Susan F. King, AIA of the Green Works Studio will present two of the first projects (one renovation and one new construction) in the City to utilize the Checklist in conjunction with the City’s Green Permit Program. The new construction project will be Sankofa House, a 5 story, 58 unit special needs apartment building for Kinship Families (Non Traditional Families comprised of grandparents or aunts and uncles raising grandchildren or nieces and nephews.) and Young Adults (18 – 23 yrs old) aging out of the Foster Care system. The Second Project will include the Trumbull & Spaulding Apartments, which includes the complete renovation of 25 affordable family apartments in two separate existing buildings.
